What’s Not Broken, Don’t Fix It

Submitted by on September 12, 2009 – 1:00 am

So, it seemed like zenical (the owner of zotaku.com) had an issue accessing my site where she gets a DNS issue.  Of course no one informed me of this (even though I was following her and she was following me on twitter) until Bluesnow (one of her authors) informed me of this on IRC… Three days after…  Before I continue, I have to say, I’m not making fun of zenical, in fact, I love her, she’s really is a sweet girl, just I’m just going to use this issue as an example because it fits this so well.  Anyways, continue reading.

What was the over all issue?  Well a few things, actually.  First of all, the Down For Everyone Or Just Me site indicted that it was down for everyone even though everyone I know of could access it just fine so I decided to change my site’s IP address over away from my dedicated IP over to a shared IP (which would explain why some of you either gotten some Default Home Page message or just a blank page).  That caused the Down For Everyone site to say it’s up but that doesn’t changed the fact that zenical still was unable to access my site (still was getting DNS issue).  I even went as far as to make sure the DNS Zones was setup correctly (which it wasn’t but now it is ^^;; ).

It pretty much all came down to having to know what her IP address is and she was unwilling to provide me her IP address because “it would changed.”  Yes, I know that already, I work for an ISP so I know how all that stuff works, which also means that you will stay in the same IP Address range, which is all I really needed to know.  After a few days later, Bluesnow, once again, spoken up and told me that zenical was using a proxy.  Once again, I wish someone told me this sooner as I added a whole bunch of IP addresses that are known spammers and those who will attempt to take over the server to use for illegal activities (even more so since I have seen a lot of brute force attempts to my FTP and SSH).

Over all, I restored the old denied hosts rules into my firewall prior to where I added the lists of known bad IPs and low and behold, zenical is able to get the site now!

Now, I’m not writing this up to point blame on anyone, I’m writing this up to show as an example that if no one tells me that something is broken (like you were able to access the site once but not anymore), let me know that it’s broke so I can fix it.  You know that saying, “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.”

I mean, come on, just look at how many different ways you can get a hold of me?  You can get me on Twitter, Crapbook, email, MSN, YIM, IRC, AIM, etc. (grated that most instent messenger programs I’m invisible most of the time so you just have to send a message and hope I’m there).  Just Google scsa20 and you’ll find me on sites that I’m active in as well where you can contact me through.  So no reason why you can’t get a hold of me.

Moral of the story?  Let me know if something’s broken :(
